VA. Threatens Spammers with Jail Time CNN RICHMOND, Virginia (AP) -- Internet mavens who clog computers with massive volumes of unsolicited e-mail pitches now risk landing in prison and losing their riches under a tough Virginia law signed Tuesday. Although about half the states have anti-spam laws, no other allows authorities to seize the assets earned from spamming while imposing up to five years in prison, said Gov. Mark R. Warner.

The penalties can apply even if the sender and recipients live elsewhere because much of the global Internet traffic passes through northern Virginia, home to major online companies such as America Online and MCI and a conduit to major federal communications hubs in neighboring Washington and its suburbs.

Top Ten Internet Home Business Myths DevWebPro Article Spend a few days online and you'd think that the Internet is a community of multi-millionaires. - Everyone seems to be making $10,000 each and every month using a simple, guaranteed system that requires virtually no work on your part ... and they're all kind enough to want to share it with you.

Every day we're bombarded with offers that claim we can make money quickly and easily on the Internet, often with a 'proven' system that 'guarantees' success. Unfortunately it's not as simple as some might have you believe. Here's the truth behind 10 common myths about building a business on the Internet:
MYTH #1: It's Easy... Everyone's Doing It. - Sure, lots of people have tried to start a business online. But how many of them actually *stick* with it and earn a reasonable profit? It's not uncommon to see estimates that 85-95% of all Internet businesses fail within the first year. An online business is still a business. It might be more affordable to start than a traditional 'brick-and-mortar' business, but online business has its own set of challenges.

MYTH #2: You Only Have to Work a Couple of Hours a Day. - How many business owners do you know that work only a couple of hours a day, especially when first starting out? There is plenty to learn about building a long-term profitable business online. Long hours and hard work are required for ANY type of business -- even on the Internet.

MYTH #3: Build A Website and the Masses Will Come. - Consider this: there are literally billions of web pages available on the Internet. Your tiny little website has to somehow stand out from the rest. This is no easy task! It's essential for every Internet business owner to learn how to effectively promote his or her site to attract the *right* people -- not just the curious who might browse and leave, but those who have an inherent interest in your products and services.

MYTH #4: I Can Do It For Free! - Again, an Internet business is still a business -- and every business requires an investment. Marketing can be significantly cheaper online, but not everything can be done without cost. Even the very basics such as registering a domain and hosting your site are costs you have to pay every year.

MYTH #5: It's Fast. - Success isn't built overnight. Anyone can create a web page and open up a website for business... but it takes time to learn how to attract visitors to the site and then convert them into paying customers.

MYTH #6: It's Perfect Because I Never Have to Deal With People. - Email is undoubtedly a convenient tool, but as easy as it is to forget, email messages are still written by people. You cannot shield yourself from interaction with real people. Even if you do most of your business via email, there will be times when it's more appropriate to speak to someone over the phone or even face-to-face.

MYTH #7: I'll Have Lots of Free Time and Flexibility. - You might... after you've put in the time and effort to build your online business to the point where you don't have to monitor it constantly. Realistically, this can take *years*. Until then you'll be doing what most start-up businesses are doing: learning to build profits and putting in long hours.

MYTH #8: I'll Make Money While I Sleep. - Certainly you can -- but again, not until your online business is receiving a steady stream of targeted traffic and paying customers, and you've learned how to automate the appropriate parts of your business. Even the most beautiful site with the most incredible products is utterly useless unless people can find it.

MYTH #9: I Just Have to Follow a Guaranteed 'System' to Become Successful. - There's no such thing as a 'guarantee' for success. The very best information in the world won't do any good unless it's put to use! We're all individuals with our own skills, experiences, and interests. No 'system' can account for all these differences.

MYTH #10: I'll Make My Fortune On the Internet. - Perhaps you will. Are you willing to put forth the effort?

Reducing in your Inbox! From After years of internet experience I've learned ways to keep Spam out of my personal email accounts. Below you will find a few tricks in keeping Spam AWAY!

1. Never give out your real email address to any website, for any newsletter, or anyone other than people you WANT to contact and ones you KNOW will not give your email address away. If you do want to subscribe to a newsletter, or need someone to contact you from a form you filled out on the web, set up a fake email account. Hotmail, Yahoo, Excite as well as many others offer free email accounts that you can use for this purpose...

2. Tell your friends and family NOT to send you forwards as a batch mailing. I always tell my friends and family that it's fine to send me forwards, but send it directly to me, not to a list of all their friends. This way you know your email address isn't piling up on a forward waiting for spammers to grab them...

3. If you do receive Spam in your inbox, DO NOT OPEN IT! Spammers are super smart these days and they use trackers and other methods of seeing who is active and who isn't. There are ways to delete mail without opening it in your mail program. If you don't know how, figure it out. If you happen to open one, don't respond to them...

4. Get a Spam filtering program. There are tons on the internet, but try to find one that will "Bounce" Spam back to the spammers. For example - Mailwasher is excellent! A lot of email software recognize "Bounced Emails" and in trying to save time and money they automatically delete the email address or mark it as inactive in their lists.

Remember, in order to keep your email address out of Spammers' hands you have to be smart and stealthy!

Introduces New Search Platform From has unveiled a new search product, which is meant to provide users with a cleaner, easier-to-use interface and faster ways to find relevant information. The Sunnyvale, Calif., company said the new offering will reduce the Web portal's dependence on graphical ads and improve the relevance of ads and sponsored results.

Starting Monday, users can access the product at www.search.yahoo.com as part of a rollout that will be completed over the next few days.

Some of the new enhancements to Yahoo! Search include an extended query box and a horizontal tab menu to search the Web, Directory, News, Yellow Pages and Images. Users can also customize their search preferences; for instance, they can search in more than 30 different languages, choose the number of results displayed per page and open search results in a new window.

Yahoo also said that it is accelerating its efforts to integrate Inktomi's search technology. The company bought Foster City, Calif., Inktomi last December.

Better Search Results

The new Yahoo! Search results page is easier to read, loads faster, and gives you results that are more relevant and comprehensive than ever before. See how the page is organized below.

Moves to Revitalize Search From today rolled out changes designed to speed up and enhance its search experience, marking its most significant departure yet from its traditional roots as a web directory. The most noticeable change is a cleaner, tabbed interface, meant to speed up search results and provide easier access to some speciality searches, such as news, yellow page listings, and a new image search function. Yahoo is also introducing a beta version of a shopping search service.

The new design features fewer graphical ads and a longer "universal" search box that appears throughout the Yahoo network of vertical sites. There's also a new "search start" page with an uncluttered interface that uses vertical tabs such as people search, yellow pages, maps, news, and so on. Replacing the graphical ads are new textual ad boxes appearing down the right side of search result pages. According to Yahoo, these textual ads may include paid listings from Overture or other providers.

At press time, it's not yet clear whether these additional text ads will be provided by Google or some other ad network. Apparently, the deal between Yahoo and Overture gives Overture-provided links certain exclusive positions within Yahoo search results. Yet the exclusivity isn't total, as the new links from "other" providers show. Google continues to play a major role at Yahoo, powering both the image and web search functions. A notable addition to web search results are links to Google's cached copies of documents, which were not previously available via Yahoo.

Although Yahoo completed its acquisition of Inktomi on March 19, the company won't say when or how it plans to integrate Inktomi into the Yahoo network, though it likely will happen soon. A Yahoo spokesperson said "you will see comprehensiveness continue to improve" with the integration of Inktomi, not only in search results, but in product search, news, travel, yellow pages, personals, and Hotjobs. Other new features include what Yahoo calls "shortcuts" for accessing certain types of content, including yellow pages, weather, maps and news. For example, typing a company name and city in the search box returns three yellow pages listings at the top of results.

Entering a street address will return a map, and using the keywords "news" or "weather" in your search terms with return relevant news or weather information, respectively. Yahoo plans to launch a new ad campaign to promote its revitalized search capabilities. "This is the first part of an evolution where we are making search results faster, easier and smarter for consumers to find what they are looking for," said Jeff Weiner, Yahoo's Senior Vice President, Search and Marketplace.

Danny Sullivan will be taking a more in-depth look at the new Yahoo Search in the Search Engine Report, which will be published at the end of this month. Yahoo Search Start Page http://search.yahoo.com/
